My president has asked me (and every other American) to donate time to community work. Volunteering. So I'm registering on
VolunteerMatch.org to give time and energy to causes that matter to me. The awesome thing about volunteering is that you can choose whatever it is that you feel strongly about. Me? It's going to be animal shelters. Cleaning cages, playing with animals, maybe even taking really great photos of them for the animal rescue website! (The photos on most sites look like doggie Gitmos.) My first gig is going to be taking care of the cats that are kept at the PetSmart across the street from my workplace. My other gig will be at the Irving Animal Shelter working with both dogs and cats. The IAS is a kill shelter so it's especially important to me to make these animals as friendly and adoptable as possible. Luckily, they have a very high rate of adoptions. In the three days since Tim and I started going there, we've seen at least 8 dogs getting adopted.
So, what do you want to do? Senior centers, nature parks, soup kitchens, highway cleanup, so many places to do your patriotic duty!
I never have worked in a shelter, but I work with an organization that rescues Australian Shepards and find them homes. My part is fostering them until they can be adopted.
Oh yeah, I also give blood to the Red Cross a few times a year. That type of volunteering is easy.
If you want to see, I have pictures of some of my foster dogs here: [link]
